Silver seashells

As the weather improves daily and we head towards the lighter evenings and longer days an escape for a few days to the coast is a welcome break for us all from the long winter we are beginning to emerge from at last.

My escape last weekend was to North Wales , dramatic skies, a little sunshine and even a snow topped Snowdonia.

The local beaches rugged and stormy were littered with driftwood, seaglass and especially seashells, a beachcombers delight

The sun made an appearance along with some amazing sunsets framed by the distant hills and mountains , a beautiful setting for walking and appreciating our amazing coastline.

The local beach to Conwy “Morfa” was full of delicate baby cockle shells mixed in with the pebbles and driftwood .

These quite dainty shells however small still had amazing details within them , every line ,ridge and curve perfect for moulding off.

Taking a careful copy of these seashells back home in my workshop I was delighted in how the delicate details still within the mould were so refined .

Just perfect to then be used to Handcast in recycled fine silver.

These Conwy cockle shells now finished however small are just lovely to wear as an accompaniment to seaglass or just on their own.

The Conwy cockle shell is now to my seashell collection available in my website shop now.

February a month of love

February finds us celebrating Valentine’s Day on the 14th capturing all the romance it brings with thoughts of love and hearts.

I find myself with any spare time in my workshop looking through my collection of sea glass for naturally shaped hearts . These hearts have sometimes taken decades to be formed into shape by the constant tumbling of the sea against rocks and sand along our beautiful UK coastline.

Seaglass hearts are very unique and extra special , their colour’s capturing the calm, sparkling magic of the coastline.

The sky blues, sea greens ,seafoam mint and creams all reflect the shades of our coast and look spectacular when surrounded by a silver setting made specifically for their heart shapes.

In my workshop I take a 3mm or 5mm deep bezel strip of fine silver depending on the depth of the seaglass heart to create the setting . This holds the heart shape securely within and being a backless setting allows the light to shine through the seaglass.

Earrings can shimmer with the light penetrating its frosty surface whilst with pendants they can be worn on either side dangling from their chain.

Earrings are very challenging as with natural seaglass its organic shape is unique and never identical.

These hearts show how amazing nature can be in recycling our glass that has found its way into the sea.

Some seaglass from the North East coastline of the UK have heart shape colours within it that are extremely rare . I love setting these hearts that originate back to the glass factories of the last century , possibly being over 100 years old , are stunning examples of what nature can create from our waste glass.

Showing the awesome power of how our ocean waves, tides and minerals of the sea create beautiful coastal treasures.

Treasures that are a great gift for any beach lovers as a reminder of their summertime holiday , seaside memories, or a keepsake that captures the essence of the ocean.

New and fresh colours in my seaglass collections .

A new year brings a fresh seaglass collection of pendants ,annd seaglass earrings, all naturally shaped by nature and the tides of time.

Each unique sea glass gem has its own hand made setting of recycled fine silver ( 999) made specifically for its shape. Never two gems are the same when they are either one stunning colour or sometimes two shades.

These multi shaded seaglass pieces have usually originated from the old glass of the last century.

These stunning seaglass “gems” are from a recent visit to seaham in county Durham

Seaglass from Seaham beach on the north east coast of the UK originates from the old bottle factories of the last century which closed back in 1921 .

These factories disposed of their “ end of day “ waste into the sea and it is still washing up on the beaches of this area today as delicate “gems “ and treasure’s .

The years of naturally tumbling by the sea have ground the old glass down into delicate teardrops and sometimes heart shapes frosting their surfaces with the minerals of the sea.

These beautiful shades of seaglass reflect the colours from original bottles and art glass.

Now handset into bezel settings of silver with open backs so the seaglass is allowed to shimmer.

Sprinkles of Seaside memories

As winter brings with it, dark days and long dark nights we begin to rewind back to those memories of lazy summer times by the beach to keep us warm.

Watching the waves crash on the beach, the rhythm of the tide, and the warm sand beneath our toes.

My love of walking along the tide line and leaving the beach with a favourite seashell , seaglass or pebble gives me comfort on these winter days

These beachcombed treasures capture the memories of every moment spent by the coastline.

Keeping those moments with you helps when you are far away by wearing that seashell close to your heart.

When you are just in need that calming memory , feel of the warmth of the sunshine and the sand between your toes , when the clouds are dark and the rain is relentless.

Every natural ridge, line and detail of each seashell I capture in my eco recycled silver casting of shells they are all unique .

Every seashell has its characteristics especially the common limpet has such beautiful detail when made in silver , its wrinkly edges and peaked crown are just so pretty .

Delicate seashell earrings dangle from sterling silver wires or studs , pendants and bracelets along with starfish, sea pearls and seahorses all feature in my tideline and seashell collections.

Also available to add to your favourite seaglass pendant a single seashell or silver charm.

Heart of the ocean

When the Ocean creates its own hearts.

After years of being tumbled by the Ocean waves , seaglass can become heart shaped.

These beautiful examples of seaglass hearts show how powerful our ocean can be . The many years of being tumbled by the waves over rocks , shingle and sand shaping their sharp edges into stunning heart shapes.

The minerals in the sea frosting their surface and sometimes adding character to their once smooth, clear existence that was in its previous life transparent glass.

The Ocean now recycling their appearance from broken glass into jewel like gems shimmering along our shoreline.

Sometimes these seaglass hearts just need a handmade silver setting made specifically for them to show off their unique and naturally formed shape.

How wonderful is it that nature can created beauty from man-made glass and bottles disposed into our oceans.

A very special Birthday collection of seaglass Jewellery

This is a selection of seaglass collected over many years by a lady , all from her family holidays abroad and in the UK . Each delicate seaglass gem held treasured memories of sandy beaches and hot sunny days spent with her family.

I set about designing a unique collection of jewellery for her using the seaglass for her upcoming 70th birthday .

Firstly we chose 8 pretty colours to make a perfect line up for the bracelet.

The above selection began the start of her seaglass bracelet .

Each seaglass gem has its own 3mm deep bezel setting designed to hold each different shape securely in fine silver.

All linked together with individual silver rings to a length long enough to wrap around her wrist.

A solid silver lobster clasp fastens the bracelet securely around her slim wrist allowing the last two gems so dangle down.

We then set about choosing 3 stunning , green seaglass treasures to make a bespoke necklace .

These beautiful green seaglass gems below were chosen to be set together using the naturally shaped heart as a centre piece.

Not forgetting of course some statement double drop dangle earrings .

The seaglass shades of green were all perfect to dangle and shimmer in their backless silver setting.

The finished collection of jewellery was a very personal and unique keepsake for wearing with memories of her holidays and sunny days.

How special and Unique is seaglass?

We are so lucky here in the UK, that as an island we are surrounded by such a dramatic coastline. Most of the time we are never more than a few hours away from a beach. This creates a nation of beach lovers , coast path walkers, and beachcombers.

Seaglass is telling the story of its deep rooted history centred around glass production .It has its long journey dating back to our bottle factory industries of the last century. Over 100 years ago the famous Candlish bottle factories of the north eastern coast of Seaham used to dispose of their end of day glass into the sea. The factories finished production in 1921 and we can still find seaglass is washing up on these beaches today .

The waste glass now tumbled over rocks, pebbles and sand for many years ,has resulted in their once sharp edges now smoothed . Each individual piece now shaped naturally, and frosted by the minerals in the sea

These delicate sea glass gems can be discovered, on the beach amongst the pebbles and seashells glinting in the sunshine like treasure .

Each piece of seaglass is a testament of the power of nature . It can be found on most of our beaches, from the far northern stretches of Scotland to the southern beaches of Devon , Dorset and Cornwall .

During its journey from shore to shore it can be transformed into varying shapes and sizes , including teardrops and sometimes hearts. No two pieces are ever the same making them totally unique.

The hearts that I use in my jewellery are all naturally formed and sometimes slightly unsymmetrical. They may be found in cornflower blues, seafoam mints and even pretty pinks.

Back in my workshop I enhance the beauty and unique shapes of the seaglass , using 100% recycled fine silver. I handcraft an open bezel silver setting specifically made for each gem ,which perfectly hugs its organic shape.

This special setting means it can dangle either way on a chain or as earrings. The light can shine through is stunning colour making it seem quite magical.
